Question: Cycling- Why won't my nitrite go down?

I have been cycling my tank for several weeks (Maybe 6+) and it's just about ready. The nitrates are at 40+, ammonia needs to be regularly added, but the nitrite will not go down at all from 5+ ppm! All my levels have been the same for about a week, I did a 50% water change and nothing changed at all. This is my first time cycling, so am I doing something wrong, or is this just normal? I have had an axolotl on hold for weeks and have had to extend the hold twice because of the nitrites. I want to get my axie in there as soon as I can.

It just takes patience unfortunately. The nitrites will surprise you - one day you'll test and they'll just be 0.

So this is absolutely normal? If it's been a week should it take much longer?

Every cycle is different but yea sounds pretty normal. It may take another week or so. Or less who knows.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
