Lately my axolotl has been standing on his hands and floating mid-water grabbing one of the plants. Is this normal behavior??

My axie's back legs sometimes float up while his front legs stay on the bottom of the tank and usually when he's about to pass waste or just a bit gassy.

This is know as 'floaty bum syndrome' and is usually caused by gas or constipation. It usually passes when they poop.

Or it could just be your axie likes it.

In that case, your axie probably just enjoys it. My lotl is forever hanging off his plants, balancing on various random limbs in the oddest positions. I think he just likes being weird.

Yes, my one axolotl is also forever contorting herself into weird positions in strange locations in the tank.

Axolotls are weird.

Weird animal, or weirdest animal? :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
