Could a single axolotl live happily in a 10 gallon tank? A friend just gave me a 10 gallon tank with all the equipment needed. I was trying to decide what critter could live in there but I haven't really been able to get a clear answer for size. It seems like everyone here has very large tanks for them. Sorry if this is an obvious question, I'd just like to be sure I make a good decision before I go out buying one.

You can house one adult axolotl in a 10 gallon tank but it will be the bare minimum. A young axolotl can live there happily. I would suggest getting a young (3-4") juvenile axolotl and whenever he becomes an adult which will take a while, upgrade to a bigger tank from craigslist.

Well, I think 10 gallons is considered the bare minimum sixe for axolotls. Having said that though, I would not recommend it. To me, 20 gallons is much better, I personally would not recommend putting a single axolotl in a 10 gallon.

You can put a juvenile axies in it though. Or some small species of newt ( like Cynops species ), if you are interested in newts.

EDIT: Dang it Jonjey, you beat me to it...and said exactly what I was saying! xD

Alright, thank you. I was thinking I could probably only put a juvenile in there. I do have two firebelly newts already though, thanks for the suggestion; it's definitely a good one because I absolutely love the ones I have.

EDIT: Oh whoops, thanks to both of you then! If it makes you feel better Seth I only saw yours for some reason.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
