Hi, I have an axie who has a mouth injury (that he'd had but it had gone away with a tri-sulfa treatment, but now is back), plus some white spots and a sore-ish thing on his side. He's my first and I'm not sure what to do. I have attached pictures. He is generally very healthy, and he is still eating.

The mouth inuury looks like he's bitten something sharp - have you checked your tank for rough or sharp edges? One of my axies did that trying to bite my finger and she caught my fingernail at an odd angle.

The pics of the 'white spots' aren't too clear, but the pattern suggest normal distribution of iridophores in a leucistic - regular marks down the spine or ribs is normal, usually brown/black or grey freckles but sometimes iridophores too.

The sore on his side isn't clear either, but it doesn't look raw or infected so I would leave it for now in terms of treatment if it's not bothering the axie.

Indian almod leaves may help - mildly antifungal and antibacterial and may give your axie a chance to heal - both the mouth injury and the 'sore'.

Tri sulfa is an antibiotic why are you using it?? Good water quality and temp will heal the mouth. As for the spots I can't see them...

Thank you! Any idea where I'd get Indian almond leaves?
I'm using it because it's the only thing I've been recommended so far...

Indian almond leaves are sometimes available at pet stores or aquarium specialists, if not you can get them on eBay.

Indian almond leaves = improves any damage to slime coats/filaments and provides mild anti fungal properties. Salt baths = treats fungus. Other medications should be used via vets advice. These are better options than using tri sulfa, methylene blue (sp?) and other fish medications :)

what about black tea baths? can these hurt him?

Tea baths are a good option for sore skin and scratches. One mug of plain black tea per 10gal , left to go cold and added to the tank.

I got my Indian Almond leaves on Ebay. They are inexpensive (grade doesn't matter, so get the cheapest), but they do take a while to arrive (at least they did for me), so I'd order some now to have them as soon as possible, and then you have them around in case of emergencies later.

In the mean time, just make sure your water quality is 100% and keep feeding him.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
