Still to set up my new tank, and my external filter. I have seen so many people say different things on what media to use, so what is the best set up?

Depends on the type of filter you have. I have a big cannister with layers of mechanical and biological filtration. I have coarse sponge, dense felt, activated charcoal, ceramic noodles and plastic balls. I also have little internal filters with just coarse sponge - they work fine too.

You need somewhere for the good bacteria to colonise, so the coarse sponge provides that as well as physical particulate removal, thats really the minimum requirement.

The pump is also important - you need one that turns the water over 4x per hour, so a 100L tank needs a 400L/H pump.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
