So after doing daily water changes every day for about a month, I decided to set this little guy up with something a bit more permanent and reliable. I changed him from his little tupperware to a larger tote (actually it's a compartment from one of those three tiered plastic drawers.) and used a tiny water pump from a small fountain (one of those little indoor plastic fountains that go on a bookshelf and the water trickles down whatever the fountain is shaped to be.. This one was a flower, if you were interested.) with a cut-in-half plastic bottle stuffed with filter floss and sponges. The sponges are already established, so he should be good to go. I gave him a hide which is the lid from a water pump that I use on my 50 gallon, he seems to like it a lot.
It's not pretty, but it should be effective at keeping his water balanced for longer periods of time. I'll of course be doing regular testing to make sure it's working. I'll be changing the position on it so it's not right in the middle of his living space, this was just immediately after I set it up.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
