I woke up this morning and noticed while my leucistic was his normal pale resting color his gill filaments (Is that what they are called?) were looking almost curled back a bit and smaller looking. Not too bad but just not his usually fluffy self. I went ahead and checked my water and temp, everything was perfect and his tank mate who was already up was wandering about with her gills looking huge and normal.

After feeding and a bit of movement I noticed the gills filling out again and I got to wondering if blood flow opens their gills more. I put some photos to kind of show. I thought it was strange and if anything I dont want to miss a warning sign if something is going on.

Yes, gills will fill out when flushed with blood, and wilt when flow is lower.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
