Hi all! I received my first two baby axolotls today!! I am so excited!! I got one speckled Leucistic and one wild type. They are about 3". I am keeping them separately right now so that I can better observe the amounts they are eating, etc., and also to reduce the chances of any injuries right now.

I have a cycled 10 gallon tank that I will be housing them in for the short term.....bare bottom with just a couple of hides and sponge filter. When they get enough size on them, they will be living in a 40B. So excited for them to get to that point!!

I am so glad I found this site!! I have been wanting Axolotls for over a year, and finding this site pushed me to go ahead, knowing I had you guys to turn to if I have any problems!!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
