What's most stressful: heat or currents?

Hi,
with indoors temperature at 26 degrees Celsius, I have managed to come down to 23 degrees in my axie tank (I use a USB fan to make waves on the surface, thus cooling down the water).

My axie does not seem concerned about the temperature (eats, poops and swims as he always does), but it's a little too high for me to feel safe about.

In the tank (72 litres) I have a circulator (350 litres/hour) to circulate the water, but since I know axies do not like currrents I have both the "incoming" and the "outgoing" water diffused through filter media, so there are virtually no currents at all in the water.

Now I started thinking about removing the filter media from the "outgoing" water stream, thus creating a flow which will stir the surface and help cooling the water. This will probably make all of the water move around all the time.

What would you say - is it a good or bad idea? What will stress him the most; the heat or the currents?

Hot weather will continue for probably at least a week.

... and of course we're going away for some days, so I cannot monitor his behavior more than today ...

You don't want a big current, but you do need to get that temp a bit lower.

Have you thought about adding an air stone in the tank? The bubbles will move the water surface a bit more. Also, I wrap my tank in wet towels at the moment as I'm struggling to keep it under 20c. It seems to help a little and insulate it.

Neither are ideal, but heat's a pretty big issue for them.

Surprised it's that hot in Sweden!

My wife was there and said it was FREEZING!

23c is warm, but not deadly. I wouldn't let it go back up to 26c though.

That kind of current would be stressful though. Why not use an air stone to agitate the water instead? It creates little current, but still increases surface exchange.

Thank you for the answers! I pulled off the filter media for a test, but my axie went crazy, swimming around and bumping into things, trying to find a calm spot ... so i quickly put it back on. He doesn´t seem at all concerned with the temperature, though. (yet)

Airstone is a good idea, will try as soon as possible. Thanks!

(And @axowattyl: o, yes, it's hot here this summer; 28-32 degrees every day this July, and almost no rain but occasional thunder and lightning. Another year "Swedish summer" means 16 degrees and rain from June through August ...)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
