I'm having a hard time figuring out what gender my two axolotls are, can anyone identify them?

Assumin they are both over 12 months old I'd say both female, but a picture of a view from the top would confirm it.

How's your water quality and temperature? I ask because the wild type looks like it has some slime coat issues. move the fish to their own tank too because they look big enough to cause problems.

Pic from above

I haven't had any trouble with the fish, they all play together. I've even seen my golden axolotl ride my pleco across the tank once. And yea I have been having trouble keeping the temp low, working on a chiller for that.

How big and what species is the pleco? You're just asking for trouble by keeping that with your axolotls. Plecos are surprisingly aggressive even though they seem calm. They've been known to attach to any slow moving fish and eat the slime coat right off. Axolotls have been killed by Plecos from inexperienced owners. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it's a risk worth taking.

**also gonna point out that the temps for Plecos are much too high for axolotls. Common Plecos also can get 2 ft

Hi fin pleco, about 5 inches, I'll move him into my pond in that case. He survived the winter out there, which the water got down to about 45, so I'm not worried about my fish surviving the low temps. Everything in the tank is scared of the axolotls, I've only had trouble with the axolotls eating other things, which is fine with me.

So, anyone know their gender? The gold one may be a little young

Have to agree with what's been said and say you have two girls

Thank yall! I guess I'll have to hope that my two new babies are males :)

Too bad they're already named woody and Steve :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
