Hello,
Glad to be here. I recently got my first Axolotl and he is marvellous

They really are splendid little creatures.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new obsession ;)

Obsession is right! He's enchanted the entire family

Have you managed to bore everyone you know with tales of your new pet yet? Does your entire social circle know EXACTLY what an axolotl is and how wonderful they are?!

Oh yes, I've been rattling on about all things axie - I think I've become very boring with the "no, not a fish" refrain!

The usual conversation goes:
Me: It's an axolotl.
Them: A what? Looks like a weird fish to me, with legs.
Me: It's an aquatic salmander.
Them: What, like a lizard?
Me: No, it's an amphibian like frogs and newts, not a reptile like a lizard or snake.
Them: Doesn't look like a frog...
Me: Thats because it's not. It's a neotenic salamder that never makes the transition to land-creature like frogs and newts do. It stays in the water its whole life.
Them: Well how does it breathe if it stays underwater?
Me: Those fluffy things on the sides of its head are external gills.
Them: If it has gills it's a fish then!
Me: (Shakes head and mutters under my breath about the standard of biology in schools these days) *Sigh*
Them: So can I have one to put in my fish tank with my chiclids?
Me: AAARRRGGGHHH!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
