Skin flaking off after a short tea bath?

Hi everyone

I gave my Axi a tea bath today for roughly 10 minutes in tank water with a light hint of tea soaked into it. It was a normal Tetley tea-bag, and was left to soak in the water for less than a minuet so that the water was slightly golden brown. I did everything like the instructions said, tested the fridge temperature and wrapped the container in a tea towel. I'm not sure if I did something wrong here other than not using fresh water, so that's why I've given this info.

I put him back in the tank after I gave it a water-change and clean-out and he's started flaking skin everywhere. It's quite a lot so I'm concerned but it's not huge chunks. I did notice he had those little plankton things feeding off of him earlier and his skin became a little patchy, but I contacted a breeder and they said the skin patching was non-fungal and normal for a wild-type. He was quite stressed in the container and for a little while after I put him back in his home, but after a feed he's cheered up and is happily swimming/crawling around as normal.

Sorry if this is a little silly to worry about! I hope someone can give me advice :D

TLDR:

Skin flaking off Axolotl quite a lot after bath
Wildtype axolotl had plankton feeding off of him/ had 'normal' discolouration patching
Gave him a short tea-bath for 10 mins, Tetley tea bag was used with tank water not fresh
Was stressed while bathing, so put him back in the tank and was fed and is now happy
Is happily playing around as normal

The same thing happened to my albino axolotl (though I didnt give him a tea bath) he had little plankton-like lumps all over him, then his skin peeled, then he died. I still dont kno what it was.

PLEASE HELP!!! Skin peeling off a lot??

Hi again I posted this last night, but it's gotten worse since then http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...29-skin-flaking-off-after-short-tea-bath.html

I looked in his tank this morning, and it seems to be shedding off quite a lot now. I gave him a 10 minute tea bath yesterday and it started after that. I'm sure it's an ok thing after the bath, but these little white plankton things have been feeding off of his flaking skin (I can't remember what they are called but I read they are harmless). His energy hasn't changed at all, he's still moving around and just being himself.
On my post last night someone said this happened to their Axi and he died.

Water test results:

Ammonia 0
Nitrate 10
Nitrite 0
GH 500 (my water is very hard in my area, hasn't caused issues before)
KH 100
PH 7.2

Temp:
17 C

I've had him since the start of August, so I'm still fairly new to this all. I'm so sorry for the spam! I'm having a panic!!

Thank you so much for your help <3

What temp was the water in the tank? Was the tea bath warmer? The only time my guys have shed was when a large water change brought the temp up a little too high.

Re: PLEASE HELP!!! Skin peeling off a lot??

These are really bad pictures, my phone is bad and I don't have a camera.

Notice the white streak/marks?

He is eating fine, his skin does not look irritated at all. He's still playful and being himself.

ALSO he does naturally have slightly lighter pigments in his skin, but the flaky parts on the pics are the skin peels

Hi I replied with pics on the other post.

The temp is 17 C at the moment, yesterday is was 15 C I did change the water and I used the same water from the tank. It was 13 C in the fridge as I wrapped it in a towel.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but why were you giving him a tea bath?

Not a dumb question at all :)

He had plankton type things feeding off of him, I can't remember what they're called but they are harmless. They're little white things, not worm like. His skin has always looked bad to me, since day 1 I got him because of the conditions he was kept in. I decided to treat him to a tea-bath to see if his skin would look a little better and if it stopped the plankton things eating him.

By his skin being 'bad' it's always had white blotches but not 'ick' as it's called, just weird pigments and some scarring on him. He was kept in a horrible tank with bully axolotls and too bright of lighting that made his skin go white and blotchy.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
