Hello everyone. I'm Steve, from Lincolnshire, England. Had an interest in Axolotls for a few years now and have recently been gifted a good size tank from a friend clearing out his garage, so two weeks ago I collected two juvenile axies. I thought I had done my research but have quickly realised now I have the axies the learning really begins! They have settled in well and are feeding on earthworms and frozen bloodworm. Looking forward to getting involved in the forums.

Cheers,
Steve

Hey Steve welcome to the forum! Congrats on the new axolotls. If you haven't already done so get yourself a test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc preferably a liquid kit and read up on aquarium cycling if necessary. The worst thing for new owners is the uncycled tank causing stress. Best of luck!

Hi,

I have a water test kit and all my levels seem ok thankfully. I have added a few moss balls and my filter is low flow, through a spray bar and onto a tub at the surface of the water to dissipate the flow as much as possible. They seem fairly happy but one of them is a lot more active than the other. I think this could just be their personalities though :).

Yeah it's definitely possible for them to have a range of activity levels. It's good you have the test kit, at that size they are more sensitive to water quality and as they grow they will produce more waste but you seem to be well researched on them so they will look forward to a long life :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
