Hello everyone I'm new to this site and I need some help. I have to axolotls and they are almost a yr old. I was heading out of town for a while and I decided to take them with me. When I got to the location I set up the tank and when I put them into the tank I noticed that the feathery things on their gills had turned white and were falling off. It has been 1 day since this happened please help me. It won't let me upload pics from my phone.

Do you have a test kit for the water? When you travelled you probably put them in something that wasn't cycled so ammonia built up. Also if they got too warm fungus could have set in. What's their temp now?

I don't have a test kit. But my cousin owns a pet store and did one for me for the tank they are in now. The water came back normal. I just put them in the water today. I am heading out to get a another thermometer as I forgot mine. But the water is really cold. And will stay that way as where I'm staying the house is always cold. I have not had any issues until I brought them with me on my trip.

I believe he meant that what they were transported in had a problem with ammonia building up.

Yes that is what I meant or that there was something in the water during transport

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
