I recently got a new axolotl and I'm not sure if it's too early to tell if it's male or female. Any guesses? My female wildtype doesn't have anything at all behind her back legs. This one has a bump. We've been calling him "Phillip" not knowing what gender it may be ? figured worst case could be that we would have a girl axie named Phillip.

Also, it is a lot thinner than my female but I do keep them both well fed. My other one is a lot rounder.

I agree with Bette. Young females usually have a sort of pointy cloaca.

I kind of thought s/he looks female, but early on they all look like that. It might be a bit too soon to tell.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
