Hey Guys!
So I may be getting an Axie soon so Im going to need a little help with getting my tank started. I know cycling and everything of that sort because I am into Tropical Fish as well.
I know not to have gravel or a strong water flow. I know not to have them with other fish. I know about the cannibalistic stage etc. My questions inclued:
How to cool w/o chiller?
Good size tank for 1?
Where is your tank? Bedroom? Living Room?

Thanks Guys! Hope to join you guys in the hobby!

Keep the tank in the coolest part of the house. I use fans over mesh tank lids for cooling when needed...in fact, I would always have a mesh lid on an axie tank. It provides great ventilation which aids cooling.
Absolute minimum tank size for one axie is ten gallons... but I recommend a 20 long. So much more room for tank interior designing! And more stability for water quality.

Thanks! I will take this into consideration! Is a mesh lid DIY? or something I can buy?

Zoo med makes nice metal mesh lids. Look for reptile tank lids on ebay and amazon for a good selection. Good luck!

The larger the tank the more stable the temp will be. If possible the lowest floor (basement) will provide the coolest area. If your house is set to anything below 75F a fan pointed at the water should bring it down enough.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
