Hi there, I'm brand new to owning an axolotl. I've had Olivia for about a month and a half. In the last two weeks I've noticed black spots on her gills and now I'm worried it may be something more. She's eating just fine. The green bits in the picture is just alge on the tank. She has no green bits on her.

Those look like the markings some leucistics have. If you google on leucistic axolotl images, you will see some examples like that. Some are quite stunning. :)

Yes, that's normal colouring for a leucistic, nothing to worry about.

Your axolotl is adorable! Yes, those markings are normal. My Falkor has the same markings.

Thank you for the reassurance! I'm glad it's normal. I wonder what she's going to look like when she's all grown up! Thank you for the nice complements on Olivia! She's a super cute fatsolotl...I mean axolotl

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
