I have an 8 1/2 inch male leucistic axolotl currently living by himself in a 36 gallon tank. I just received a 6 inch sub adult male leucistic axolotl. What would you recommend for introducing/housing them together?
its a 36 gallon bowfront tank. Rowan (my larger lucy) has been super super gentle with Ash so far. He is really docile. We've only been letting them together when we are watching and so far, theyve been great together. We initially introduced them to each other in a tub so we could quickly separate them if needed. We've been letting Ash cruise around in the big tank with Rowan a bit when we are home to keep an eye on them.
They maybe okay together as long as you keep them well feed and have them on opposite ends of the tank during feeding time, to prevent nipping.
My two guys are the same size and about 1.5 years old and still do the odd nipping when they get too close to each other while feeding. One will "freak out" and swim around wildly when nipped but usually there's no injuries from the nip except from maybe bumping into decorations.
The last couple days we have kept them together full time. So far no issues, in fact I'm not sure Rowan even knows what Ash is. I make sure to keep Rowan well fed. Normally he was getting fed every other day, but Ash gets fed every day so we have just cut Rowan's amount down per day so he gets some at the same time. We will continue to keep a real close eye on them though.
The smaller one is at risk of being eaten . You may not have had a problem so far but that doesnt mean you wont, your first indication of an issue could be a missing axolotl.
Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation
Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
