Help! My new axoltol Freddie was perfectly happy last week, and on sunday when I changed her water and I put her in a little container next to the tank to do the deed. I admit when I fished her out with the net we had troubles as it was the first time and when I tried to put her in the container she figited and I covered her gills with the net ACCADENTLY. so in the container she was mega stressed. After I cleaned and changed the water I put her back in the tank after adding the conditioner in the water (but a little too much) now she is still stressed and I changed half the water today and added only a little conditioner, but still she has the forward gills and I think curled tail

(And she still ate perfectly well.)

You can't add too much conditioner, really.
And if you're worried you could put out the lights for a day or so, but as she's eating well she will probably settle very soon. :)

Hi Hayley,

Unless you are doing a massive tank clean etc there really is no need to remove your axie from the tank, I never do with my 3 axies and they are quite used to me even doing big cleans in their tank with big water changes aswell and they never get stressed from it they just stay in their hiding places whilst I do (they have never put gills forward mid clean) it so try not to remove your axie next time as I am sure he will be just fine where he is

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
