I was just wondering how many axolotls generally does everyone keep in a tank. While I know the rule of thumb is at least 10 gal per axolotl I still keep my three in a 55 gal and my baby is in a separate tank temporarily. I have seen some axie owners keeping 5 in a 50 gal and others keeping 1 in an 80 gal. So personally how many axies do you guys keep in a tank? Do you generally stick with a specific number or is it always subjective?

I have two axolotls in a three foot tank. I would go by floor space more than gallons. I use the one axolotl per foot of tank plus one extra foot for plants, ornaments and hides etc. so three axolotls in a four foot tank etc.

I have two, but one is a baby, so they have separate tanks. The adult is in a 20gal for now, and the baby is in a 10gal.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
