Hello! I got my first axolotl and I am currently letting the tank cycle before I put him/her in and I’m wondering about the substrate I put in the tank. It is sand but I don’t know if it is fine enough. Would the sand be fine if it is smaller then the axolotl’s waste (Incase it did get sucked up)?

In general you either want sand as it passed through their digestive system (yours is probably fine if your axolotl is not a larvae) or pebbles larger than their mouths so that they can't ingest them. They are perfectly fine without any substrate as well. Makes cleaning the tank much easier.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
