Strange lump on axie

Hi all. I noticed a small lump on my axie Orangina's tummy a few weeks ago, near the front leg. And now it seems to have grown a bit. I have no idea what it could be, and why. Does anybody have any ideas? Orangina eats well, and behaves normally. Should I take him to the vet to be checked out?

I have attached some pics. Sorry the quality is not very good, as they are taken with my cell phone camera.

Hope to get some replies soon. Thanks in advance.

Axolotls don't have perfect skin but if you have noticed the bump actually growing, then a vet check couldn't hurt.

When I bought Abby home I noticed he had lumps like this on his body, he has 3 in different spots. As shannon has said it is ok but if you are worried a vet trip might help.

It could be something like an abscess or a cyst. I second (third?) everyone else: keep an eye on it; if it changes, see a vet.

Many thanks for your kind replies. I have decided to keep an eye on it, and if it changes/grows anymore, I will take Orangina to the vet. I could take him even tomorrow, but my worry is that he is quite a shy, nervous axie, and taking him to the vet in a bucket on a train ( I don't drive) would definitely stress him....I will keep you posted. Many thanks again.

I have the exact same issue with mine, it appears in 4 places and it seems to be very slowly getting larger over time. I went to a vet when I first noticed this and nothing turned up in the test results however since then it has grown slightly which is about 2 months ago. Other then the bumps my axo acts perfectly normal. Not sure what it is but if you get any info Id love to know.

Took Orangina to vet's, as the lump had grown. He wasn't able to tell if it is tumour, cyst, bacterial etc, so he will surgically remove it on Thursday. Eek, little Orangina is gonna be under anaesthetic, but am sure they know what they are doing....I will let you know what happens.

Hi. Here's the update. Orangina had the operation to remove the lump today. And am sooo happy to say he is ok. He is at home now, in an antibiotic bath. The vet has sent off the lump to the lab, to find out what it is. Will let you know when I get the results.
Oh, and am glad I have an insurance for my pets, as Orangina's op etc cost £370.

Just got the result's for Orangina's lump. It was sarcoma, which means some sort of cancer, if I'm correct. But the vet said they got it all out, and it hadn't spread...Luckily!
He said that sort of lumps can sometimes be bacterial, but Orangina's wasn't . Am so glad I took him to the vet's before it spread.
He is now back in his normal tank, and has been eating, even though not moving as much as normal yet. But I'm sure he will soon :)
Thanks for caring.

Great news :D

Glad he's doing ok, can I ask where you took insurance out to tho? All the pet covers i've seen seem to relate to the more 'normal' pets.

I'd be quite interested in taking some out for my little guys

And, of course, how much it costs - obviously, our little friends are much more important than the money, but if it's wonderfully priced, seeing it here may encourage other people to consider it too!

My insurance is via exoticdirect.co.uk. It's about £100 a year, which I pay with monthly direct debit, about £10 per month. It covers 1-3 little 'critters'.Meaning that all my pets = 2 axies and 1 lizard, are covered, so it works out quite little per animal. But obviously if you only have 1 axie, which is healthy, am not sure if it is such a great deal. But for 3, definately :)

I've got 5 corn snakes + 5 axies atm. I wonder what sort of deal they'd do ;-)
Well, even this year's insurancefees have saved you £270 so far

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
