So I bought my wild type two Saturdays ago along with a luesistic companion and I've noticed that it only has 5 gills and a tiny stump for a sixth. I guess it was bitten off when in the store. Do gills grow back the same way other appendages and extremities do???

It's probably from another tank mate in the store.
The gill should grow back but wont be as long as the others

Hi Tammy, I had one that had lost not only both front feet, but also two of his gill fronds. After about a month or two, lots of TLC and attention, they have all grown back. The regenerated limbs/body parts may look a little different in size and/or color however. Just be sure to keep an eye out for any infection and your Axie should be a-O.K.

Another question. My juvies gill frills look decrepit and shrivled like they're dehydrated. They act normal so I dont think they are sick. Their gills were never as full and fluffy as my first pair's. Can this be attributed to metals in the water? The parameters are fine and their diet is kale and potato fed earthworms.

Maybe but your dechlorinator should remove metals as well . I've heard the more dissolved oxygen your tank has the smaller there gills may be but I'm of the opinion that it has to do more with genetics . Also if these are from the same batch but are the runts this may have something to do with it. I would try feeding earth worms and a highly diverse diet as this seemed to promote not just gill growth but overall growth.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
