Cynops pyrrhogaster (Osaka Prefecture)

Thought I'd post some C.p pics to show how different they can be from each other depending on where they came from. I currently have C.p here from 7 prefectures, on three islands (Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku).

To start with, these here are some of my oddest ones, being grayish-brown in color with prominent dark spots on their bodies, (even the males, it seems)

I'll leave it to others to determine what "race" they are.

One note: I did not catch these myself, and it seems they might not necessarily be the most representative of the C.p of the locality they came from. They may have been selected for their phenotype.

Thanks. But they sure are, aren't they?!

I only got five out of the 10 or so that were available. Now I wish I would have bought the whole bunch! I'm thinking of checking out the precise site they came from sometime in the spring, during the breeding season.

Breed them? I certainly intend to! Just hoping they'll cooperate!

Any Cynops aficionados out there willing to hazard a guess on which race this is?

By the way, what's the amphibian-speak word for those prominant flaps on the side of the head? Any website with a diagram showing what to call the various external parts/features of a newt?

Tim

I believe that those protrusions from the head are called patroid glands or something like that.

Keep us informed of any breeding.

Yup, parotoid glands.

Nice pics, Tim. AFAIK these are still regarded as "intermediates" between the northern and southern races. However, the area inhabited by these is large and there will surely be regional/local differences.

TKS. Dunno why I can never get the heads into proper focus with this camera. By the way, I found the diagram I was looking for on page 31 of Staniszewski's book..

I've since heard that these were all collected from the same rice paddy or area of paddies in Osaka, and that others in the area were all more "normal" looking.

I still haven't got around to shooting my other C.p groups properly, but here's another of an Osaka male in breeding dress.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
