I live in New York. I'm wondering if anyone knows any particularly trusted breeders, because googling led to some pretty sketchy sites (like one that said it was cruel to keep one Axolotl by itself, and insisted you buy multiple babies to live in the same tank; didn't mention cannibalism at all). The pet store near me has them, but I've heard some bad things about the conditions there. Would it be safer to have one shipped to me?

Either shipping, or maybe they are sometimes available at the Westchester county Center reptile expo in White Plains. Don't know what city you are at.

Ah, thank you! The Westchester expo is coming up in February, so I'm going to get one there

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
