So I’ve successfully kept a planted nano tank with mainly tetras for about 4 years now and I have a bio active vivarium for my dumpy frogs who I adore but nothing has prepared me for adopting 2 cute little axolotls. They were near death when I got them so I surrendered them temporarily to a local breeder who has brought them back to health. They’re ready to come home soon so I’m setting up the tank to be cycled. The picture below is very sad but hopefully I’ll have a fun update in a month or so with them in their new habitat!

You may already know this but use nightcrawlers as a food source for them. They look really skinny (I'm guessing from not being cared for properly before you got them) so these will fatten them up quickly. Have they put on weight since the breeder has been caring for them?
Looking forward to updates and seeing your tank!

They have put on weight and we got lucky and their gills have grown back too! The breeder has them in low temperature and worked them up to worms :)

Great! Keep us updated on their condition!

So you asked for an update. The axolotls are doing great, their gills have almost fully grown back. And I have phase 1 of the tank cycling now, I only have half the tank set up so please dont judge too harshly, I never take on an animal I haven't read enough about to write a small book.

They are looking a lot better, the leucy is gorgeous. Your tank looks pretty great so far

I want another good hiding place at least but I'm glad the tank is looking good so far :)
Now all I need is names. They are currently Shadow and Phantom but that's from the person who let them almost die.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
