Hello! I'm a grad student studying biology, but not the kind of biology that is useful for axolotl care. My smug child Ax (Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill) is a fat 3 yr old axolotl who has benefited greatly from me anonymously lurking around here, but I've been dealing with a mildly concerning problem for a while now so I finally decided to join!

Ax is doing fine - I'm pretty sure I'm way more stressed than he is at any given moment. I'll post in a sub-forum once I figure out how forums actually work (my lurking strategy was just aggressive googling), but I've been having tank cycling problems for the last three months after two years of stable cycling...

In the meantime, I've attached a photo of my boy. I've raised him since he was an inch long, he's been through some journeys :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
