NATIONAL EXAMINER (Denver, Colorado) 04 November 08 Giant salamander euthanized at National Zoo
Washington: Staff at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo have euthanized a Japanese giant salamander that was suffering from liver disease and a skin infection.
The female salamander was euthanized Monday following several months of treatment. It was the only salamander at the zoo.
The Japanese giant salamander is one of the largest salamander species in the world, weighing up to 55 pounds and measuring nearly five feet long. It's listed as near threatened on the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Species.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
