I got my axolotl, Ichtaca, about two weeks ago. She's a golden albino! Her gills are pretty short, but she seems happy in her tank.

OOOOOH! What a lovely fatty!!!
now why don't people say that when they see me :)
She has got dinky gills hasn't she, is that just the way she is or will they grow any do you think? She looks lovely!

I got her from our university's science building, so I figure she was kept with other axolotls and had her gills nipped at some point.I do hope she grows them back! Though even if she does, the asymmetry is rather endearing.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
