Illness/Sickness: Does My Leucistic Axolotl Have a Health Problem? White Bumps Have Started to Appear.

Hi guys,

I'm started to become concerned with my leucistic axolotl I've had since March. He has started to become much more sluggish in the past few days and hasn't been eating normally. I've also noticed a strange white bump pattern on both sides of his torso. Could this possibly be an infection, or is it normal?

I had an aquarium cycle crash, so I've been keeping him tubbed for the past three weeks. I've been making sure to do daily water changes with dechlorinated water. He normally eats Salamander pellets, but I've transitioned my axolotl to eating Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets. I also make sure not to overfeed him either. The water temperature level stays below 68 degrees in a cool basement. I apologize for the low quality photos. It was difficult to capture the white bumps in perfect clarity. Any sort of feedback or advice is greatly appreciated!

Looks like it could be normal skin texture to me, I wouldn't worry too much about overfeeding since they appear to be on the slim side currently - ideally the head and torso should be the same width. I feed a mix of hikari pellets, salamander pellets, live worms, and the odd live shrimp as treats so don't be afraid to mix it up either, if the eating issues were why you switched pellets it could just be that they got tired of the first ones.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
