My new baby axolotl has some fuzz all over his body and I’m really not sure what it is. I’d have said fungus but it’s not really on it’s gills. What could it be and what should I do? He is a rescue, so he’s really skinny. Now he’s just really floating at the top and not even going down to eat.

Must be fungus and/or slime coat issue. How long have you had this one, and what kind of housing is it in right now? Can you test your water as well. Is it eating?
I would tub it in cool water and do tea baths to help soothe the skin, this will also help if it is fungus.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
