I was wondering if garden snails would be a nutrious food for an axolotl. Of course with out the shell, but i know a guy who breeds them for fishing bait(says they work better than worms) and he doesnt use any pesticides and or any other chemicals to raise them. So I wondered if it could be used as another part of their diet rotation. I've seen on some of the posts about food that bugs found around the home range from good to poor and I noticed that slugs were on there...so I thought I would ask and see if anyone has used snails or if it isnt that good for them.

Thanks for any info

Hi,

in addition to the menu you can feed the snails. The more varied the diet, the better it is. But they mustn´t be treated with chemicals.

Depends on the Axolotl, really. Mine have never been interested in snails in any form, even when offered with their favorite set of tongs.

As mentioned before though, do not use snails or any other wild caught food for that matter, from an area treated with pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.

Axies are gulpers rather than chewers, so most snails will need to have their shells removed or crushed. For thick shelled garden snails, a few minutes in a salt water bath does the trick. Just be sure to rinse off salt-bathed snails with clean spring water before serving them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
