I previously posted that I found a salamander in my basement and put him in a container with a wet paper towel. Well, he has now turned almost completely WHITE! The paper towels I used were bleached with non-chlorine bleach. What have I done to this poor animal! I will wait a bit for a response but then I will just let him go outside and let nature take its course. Oh my goodness!! I hope he is not suffering.

Regular white paper towels are used for salamanders all the time. I use Bounty, if that helps any. I think your sal turned white for some other reason. But you can buy unbleached paper towels just to be sure.

I'm posting the link to your old thread, so people can figure out what kind of sal we are talking about

Did you ever figure out for sure what kind it is?

He looks like either the Clouded salamander or the Aboreal Salamander. I live in the North Berkeley Hills in California. I have only had him a few hours. I was planning on letting him go outside when it got dark.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
