I found these little guys in a roadside ditch. The online herpetological atlas shows only 2 salamanders in this county, Ambystoma texanum and A. mavortium, so I assumed they had to be one of those species, but the images and descriptions don't match. They have 5 toes on their back feet and a dark stripe through their eyes. The closest record for Notophthalmus viridescens is two counties away, so it would be a huge range extension if that's what they are. Also, since the species is protected in my state, it might be a bit of a problem for me to have them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
