"rare breedings" reported by zoo's. Are they so rare?

hey,
someone on another forum has just noticed her slimy salamander has laid eggs. now she's all excited because she's found a link about a zoo saying how rare it is for these to breed in captivity (Links http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071022/NEWS38/710220337 and http://www.toledozoo.org/discover/pressreleases/2008/Salamander hatches.pdf) Now I'm sure i've seen thes on sale CB in the UK (where alot of american species are pretty hard to get your hands on) and I'm wondering are salamander breedings so rare in captivity. I could understand if it was a tiger salamander or some other well know hard to breed species, but I'm wondering if zoo's are just blowing there own horns with things like this.
 
It’s rare enough to warrant a good hard toot of the horn (maybe even rarer than tiger breeding).

Be wary of anyone selling slimy salamanders as cb. I’m sure they do get bred occasionally but they’re also one of the UK’s most popular wc plethodontid import. I can’t say I’ve seen cb available in recent times - if ever.

I would say it's fairly rare, and I would also say that zoos like to toot their horns.

I think the Desmognathus welteri is certainly rarer, but for some reason didn't get the same level of tooting...

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
