Just when I thought I'd seen every bug my yard had to offer. It (they) were under the logs where I usually collect my slugs and worms. About an inch long. When I disturbed them, they raised their back ends like a scorpion does.

It looks like a Devil's Coach Horse beetle. They are originally European but introduced into the Americas.

Sorry this doesn't seem to have worked as a hyperlink.

hmmm...it does look very close, though the one I saw had yellow on it and the one in the wiki pic is all black. Thanks!

I bet Oceanblue is close. Instead of being that particular European bug it might be one of the 2,800 North American species.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
