Moving newts from wiggling worms to chopped worms

So far I have been able to feed my eastern newts very small worms from my garden. I only have to chop the worms in half, and they go into the water still wiggling. I've noticed the newts only eat the live bits. If a worm half is not wiggling it get ignored.

That makes me a little worried about winter time. I know I'll have to get nightcrawlers then and chop them up. Will the newts wait until they are very hungry before accepting chopped worm? Are eastern newts (Nvv) especially picky about live food?

If you continue to feed them worms, they will learn to eat the pieces even when they are not wiggling. N.v. are not picky about food being live, in my experience. This is assuming that the newts are aquatic.

Thank you, that's a relief. Yes, they are fully aquatic. They have an island and lily pad but seldom use them.

I always buy worms right before winter, at a local worm breeder. I stuff those in a large container with soil and harvest as needed. That way I always have worms at the ready.

Yes, I suppose I will do that too. Just when I was done with live crickets I'm turning into a worm rancher.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
