Hi, so recently i noticed that my axolotls eyes were bulging and that it's tail is thinner than usual. Water parameters are fine and he seems to be acting normal.

If you notice the gills and tailfin start receding significantly, I would suggest lowering the water level and put a sloping land area in the tank. If its gills and tailfin are almost gone, and you notice it on the land area, then change the terrarium to completely terrestrial and take care of it like a tiger salamander. If this happens you will be one of the few people in the world to possess an axolotl with a genetic mutation to causes it to morph like other salamanders, instead of remaining neotenic.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
