Newt skin problem

Hello,

A few weeks ago, my newt, a Taricha torosa, started shedding constantly, like once a week, and his skin appeared stretched and he had grown lethargic and stopped eating.
He lives with an axolotl with whom he had lived with in a 30 gallon tank for years with no problem. Not sure what the problem was, but I took him out into a smaller tank with clean spring water. He has not improved since then. He now doesn't even shed his full skin at once anymore, just in pieces.

Does anyone know what this might be?

Can you show pics? Is he all skinny? Sometimes they don't eat much in the winter.

Hello there.
Unfortunately my camera is not with me and my phone can't take close up pictures. His skin is literally pealing off in pieces constantly. He currently has pieces of peeled skin still attached to his body. Last night, his eyes suddenly got covered in what appears to be a white fungus.

I had been keeping him in pristinely clean water and cool, but now I have resorted to refrigeration and salt baths. His temperament seems to have improved since I started, as he is moving around and does not seem sluggish, but he still won't eat. He's not exactly skinny, but I can tell he had lost some weight. A few months ago I was actually concerned that he had put on too much weight.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, he's a little better now. He still won't eat, though. He is not shedding as much, and the fungus has died down. Now, however, my Axolotl is showing the same symptoms. Some of his gills and a few of his toes have rotted back rapidly, and now he too, who used to eat like a pig, won't eat. I'm giving him the same treatment.

I'm going to try the Methylene blue just to help the process, as my Taricha torosa is starting to look skinny. Hopefully that will help.

Thanks for the page.

Hello,

I got a picture of my Taricha torosa, and he is not looking well. Behaviorally wise he seems normal, but he still won't eat, at all. I tried other food items (worms, fish, the sinking food he normally eats), I even tried force feeding him, and he keeps spitting it up. He's almost skin and bones, and the salt baths and the Methylene blue, and he stills sheds on a daily basis (though refrigeration seems to make him more comfortable).

Does anyone have any other advice?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
