Wow, I haven't been on these forums for SO long - not since I sold my juvenile firebellied newts in fact. I've been making do with 3 tanks of "seamonkeys" on my desk at work. But I have just bought my first axolotl on TradeMe (local auction site) and will be going to pick him up this weekend.

I don't have a heap of info from the current owner, but apparently he is a golden male about 2 years old, healthy, and the tank is about 15 gallons, which is adequate for 1 I guess. This is the only photo I have to go on and I while I have been doing all my research this week I'm not sure what I think about this substrate. Do you experienced owners think I should swap it out for sand asap?

When I enquired as to what this guy was eating currently I was was told "worms and fish flakes"! So even though he looks ok from what I can see I'm not terribly confident that he has had an ideal life to date. This may all be a huge risk and I may end up with a sick axolotl on my hands, so any advice welcome!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
