I like to have a back up food for live earthworms for if I can't get ahold of them, I have someone else more squeamish taking care of my axolotl, I'm in a rush and don't want to dig to find good worms ect. I was using hikari sinking carnivore pellets and they seem to work fine but I'm out and looking for something new.
I'm debating between rangen salmon pellets or repashy grub pie made into gel worms. Does anyone have opinions on which food is better nutritionally? Is one messier/make their waste messier? About how much gel does 3oz grub pie powder make? Looking for opinions and personal experience with either.

I haven't used the Repashy grub pie but I've feed my axolotls the Rangen pellets and they love it. I think one prefers the pellets more than the live worms. A 3lb bag lasts a long time. Luckily, I vacuum packed the pellets in 1lb bags to keep them fresh and from drying out.
Looking at the nutritional break down, the Rangen pellets have 45% protein vs Repashy 40% protein.

Soft moist salmon pellets are less expensive and it looks like they would be more convenient.

repashy is a little messy (it melts if submerged too long) but my 'lotls LOVE it, they go freakin CRAZY when i give it to them.
i bought gummy worm molds that i use to make repashy worms, i keep them frozen for times when my worm bin needs a rest or im too tired to deal with live food.
i occasionally feed salmon pellets too and they love those but they are super tiny pellets so its sorta hard for me to feed with them, i use them like treats mostly

I have the 3/32" salmon pellets and 5/32" salmon pellets. I use the small ones for axolotls up to a little over 3" long. I use the large ones for adult axolotls. I have 88 lbs of salmon pellets sitting on my computer room floor today ready to be bagged up for my use and to sell.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
