There isn't much information anywhere on the hardness preferences of specific species. P. labiatus comes from mountain streams, which could vary in hardness depending on the type of rocks and amount of rainfall locally. Based on personal experience with many newts (no paddletails), I would say newts are quite adaptable to whatever the water hardness is. I certainly have hard water, and have no trouble keeping and breeding various newts.
