Extra toes!

Is it common for an axolotl to have an extra set of front hands/feet? I'm a new mom of two 2-year-old females. One of them has an extra set of hands. Like one set grew on backwards. Not that I mind just curious. I've noticed if she's being lazy she will use the extra hand to help grasp things and pull up or play her floating game. ( use to scare me! Thinking she's dead ) now that I've had them a while this is just her ordinary silly game she plays. She also likes to lay upside down wait for me to come over and flips over fast and press her face to the glass. :p Like I FOOLED YOU!

I hope this is all normal because I’m one stressed out mommy!
 
Think it's common if their hands or feet has been bitten off many time. Please post some picturesif you can! It would be interesting to see the two hands.
 
Regeneration after an injury is not always perfect, this is more common where a limb is partially severed rather than completely detatched, if the damaged limb survives a replacement can form leaving two feet or two legs in the same spot.

Thanks! That does make sense.
I have tried to take pictures but she always moves.. She's very curious and follows my hands. I have one that kinda shows it. Ill try again and if I cant get a better one Ill post it.
 
As long as the extra limb is causing no probs its fine. Im loathe to recomend anybody chopping bits of axolotls unlesss its for their own benefit and the chopper knows what they are doing. Enjoy your quirky axolotl ?
 
They don’t have a light on their tank, so the pictures are not that great. I had to feed her to try and get her to hold still. One picture looks like she is missing a hand, but I think she just moved at the right time. I promise she has all her limbs plus extra lol.. I can't say how she was treated before I got her but her and her sister are very happy in their new home

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
