If you are using lights cause of plants you should use them according to your day night cycle. Set up a timer if you must so they go on at the crack of dawn and off when the sun goes down. As far as eggs, if you could, explain some characteristics of what makes you think it is gravid or show pics.:D

Good luck,

Jay

You do not need to have lights on for your newts. Eggs don't need lights either.

Sorry I thought you ment for the terrarium it self, as plants will need light if you are useing live ones but the newts do not.
If you are useing live plants then I suggest useing some lights on a typical day night cycle as you probably know this.

Gravid means pregnant basicaly or egg bound/carrying eggs, and no, the eggs need no light.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
