Raising silkworms as food

Has anybody tried raising silkworms from eggs to use as food for newts-sals-toads?
If so what were the results?
Are the caterpillars eaten?
 
Only raised in the sense of gave them (processed)food and got them a bit bigger before using them.

I think these are a great, unknown, under-used food. I wish they were as widely available as they are in the US. I was saddened by the closure of the UK's Silkworm Factory.

Results were they were taken by terrestris, salamandra but not others - galliaca, red/orange terrestris.

I am not done with these yet!!!

I was looking up prices on the site

and was thinking of buying eggs and food to supply silkworm of various sizes for my newts salamanders and toads.
If all went well then I would just buy in the food,grow some on untill moth stage and culture my own.

Anybody fed the smaller silkworms to newts?
 
Hey Morg,

I've fed silkworms to all my guys no problem. I raise them myself personally. If you take care to keep them clean they're really easy to raise. If you want to ask me any questions just send me an email.

I will give raising silkworms a try.
 
I have had an email conversation with the folks at silkworm supplies, and they will soon be adding small waxworms to their list.
Its about time somebody in the UK started selling waxworms in sizes other than the large ones usually offered.
The smaller ones are very lively and great for juvenile newts

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
