Hey all, first time poster here!
Me and my wife got our Axolotl (Taro chan) back on May 5th, he seems really healthy, eats and poops all time! We got him from a friend who breeds them.
My question, ever since we got him on the top part of his skin kinda looks like it is peeling or something. I'm not sure if this is normal or something we should be worried about.
He is in a 20 gallon tank by himself he has 3 hides and a glass bottom.
We always take his poop as soon as we see it with a turkey baster as well as any left over food as well as regular water changes.
We have a fluvial 106 filter, one thing we have noticed he likes to sit by the filter in the water is that normal too?
We live in Alberta where it is getting pretty hot +30 degrees celsius today. We want to get a water chiller, does anyone have a good recommendation to go with our filter?
Please see the attached pictures and thank you!

Oh what a little cutie!
Check your decorations for any sharp bits. The tail could have dragged on something. If it is just an injury it will heal in time. Do you have a water test kit?
Mine like to sit at the same spot don't worry haha. The chiller brand I use is hailea, not sure if it's available where you are. You can get them new or a second hand one is always a good cheaper option! It'll hook straight up to your filter. Any chiller should attach to the tubes you use with your filter, you will just need a third one (tank -> filter -> chiller -> tank)

Thanks!
We are looking at a few different water chillers, We'll probably get the one you suggested.
Another question, we have noticed there is like a white fuzz appearing at the bottom. We keep sucking it out but it comes back is that something to be concerned?
We will do a water test tonight and I'll post the results.

Did water test:
PH: 7.6
Ammonia: 1.0 PPM
Nitrite: 1.0 PPM
Nitrate: 5.0 PPM

The water temperature is usually around 20 degrees and sometimes goes a little higher but we are getting a chiller soon so that should fix the issue with that.
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what the fuzz might be. Usually anything white and fluffy is fungus, though you'll usually see it on the axolotl.
Looks like your tank is still cycling. How often are you doing water changes? I would do about 25% every 2-3 days at the moment until ammonia and nitrite are 0. Nitrates can stay up to 40ppm. If you can tub your axolotl while the tank cycles it'll keep it from being exposed to the ammonia.

Thanks for the information!
We change about 10~15 % every 2-3 days then 25% then 10~15% rotating but we'll change to 25% at least each time. Could the slightly higher water temperature also affect the ammonia and nitrite?
I don't think he has any fuzz on him, but I'm not sure. I took a couple pictures of him just now!
Thank you again for helping!

Make sure you test the water before a water change, just to tell you how much to change. I do 25% but you might find the 10-15 works :)
I don't think water temps affect ammonia etc, at least at 20 degrees (I imagine anything above 30 might start killing off bacteria). You can use a fan over the surface of the tank to cool it a bit until your chiller arrives.
I can't see any fuzz on him, just keep an eye on that stuff. If it gets worse or you see it attached to anything let me know.

Thanks!
We do have a fan blowing on the top for now.
I have another question about his tail, I think it might have some spots on the bottom near the end, maybe I'm just over worried.
He also likes to squeeze under the logs we have, as well as behind the filter tube. I don't know if this is something that he did to his skin?
Please see the attached pictures.

Squeezing under the logs might be irritating the tail yes. I wouldn't really worry too much unless you're seeing the tail get worse. You could replace the wood with something softer. Those spots may just be pigment or some scratches from the wood. If they're flush with the skin they may just be pigment :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
