Hi,
I was just wondering if anybody has any experience with keeping Marbled Newts in outdoor enclosures throughout the year in the UK ?

I've kept and bred them before but always over-wintered them at 7-10 C.

Many thanks

Damian

I have kept marbled newts outside for the last 20years, they are very similar to great crested newts ,and will interbreed. I live in Macclesfield (Manchester area ), the main problem with the UK is the winter's are not consistently cold ,and as we know they probably use body fat which can kill them. I think mine hibernate under sheds ,in walls ect. Hope this is of some help. Martin

Many thanks to Niels and Martin for your replies.

I might have to give it a go with these in an outdoor enclosure.

I'm hoping to start constructing one shortly.

Cheers

Damian

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
