 hey, its me,
I have recently bought two axolotls. Onyx, my blackish wild type, has a lump on the side of her head, behind the feathery gills. My other axie, Nim-a-nim does not have any such thing on her body. Is Onyx sick, or could it just be a birth defect? Please help!! i am worried for Onyx's safety. :(

Hi,

Sorry noone has replied to your post but I am afraid no real answer can be provided without a pic. Do you have a camera phone or know someone who could help you get a pic here?

i am working on a picture but have lost the camera :( it looks to me as though the lump is around 1cm across, and sticks out about 0.5-1cm, it doesn't seem to bother Onyx but I couldn't say for sure. Thankyou for your advice

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
