Wonder if this ever occurs in nature.

Poor girl! Its amazing how much variation your group shows, Pleurodeles are actually quite attractive newts in some phases. How big are they?

They're about 6 inches, maybe, and their tails are wide. Yes, they vary in color. They are like beautiful granite.

If people are interested, I have six, and they have three different (US) sources.

Well, looks like at least three are males!

A lot of waltl have been imported lately. Good that the gene pool even in the US is going to be fairly large. Here's hoping you get lots of eggs!

Wonder if this ever occurs in nature.

I have a photography book about frogs, and it showed a female toad with four or five males surrounding it like that. It said often they drown while the males are fighting over it.

This mating balls are relatively common in manny amphibian species.... and last week I found a mating ball with two different species mixed together : Bufo calamit in the middle and Pelobates cultripes around them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
