Ok, so after some research I have summarised what I know. Please read and let me know if its correct, thanks. Want to have happy healthy axxies! (FYI- 1 black male named axle and 1 gold male named oro). Got the enviro and food down pat already i think.
Fridging axolotls –
To be done if they are sick, not eating, injured, floating (compacted), have fungus or bacterial infections, the water temperature in the tank exceeds 24 degrees Celsius, or you need to put them into a low maintenance (?) state. It can be done indefinitely.
Salting Axolotls –
For fungal and bacterial infections. Seen as white exudate or any kind of unusual goo anywhere on axolotl. Can also be done for refusal to feed and after traumas, tho usually fridging itself will be adequate.

- Set temp in fridge to between 5 and 8 degrees. Check temp by placing a thermometer in a glass of water on the shelf that you choose for a few hours.
- Put them in ambient, fresh and dechlorinated water in a suitable container, with a lid. Use enough so that they are fully extended and covered. More water means that contaminants will be more dilute. If they are floating or compacted however, make sure their feet can reach the bottom easily.
- Wrap the container in a tea towel to make it light proof and place in fridge.
- Get a jug of water, dechlorinate it and place in fridge alongside axolotl.
- Change 100% of water daily using the cool dechlorinated water.
- Try to feed once a week; don’t worry if they don’t eat. They will still poo in great amounts for a while tho’ which is why daily water changes are imperative.

- Fridge the axolotls for at least 8 hours.
- Prepare the salt bath at the same time. Use 1 ½ to 2 teaspoons of salt per 2 litres of clean, dechlorinated water and fridge alongside axolotl. Also cool unsalted dechlorinated water and label clearly.
- Place axolotls in cold salt bath and leave for 10 minutes ONLY.
- Clean and thoroughly rinse the fridging container.
- Use a cotton bud to gently encourage any growths to leave, if necessary, a lot should be in the salt water now. Do not rub, poke or prod.
- Change water back to clean fresh dechlorinated cool water after only 10 minutes, and fridge again.
- Can be done up to every 12 hours.
